JALEOS for Intro to Flamenco

Jaleos (hah-lay-os) are the words of encouragement and approval that get shouted during a performance. ¡Olé! ¡Toma! ¡Arsa!

Wow, Rina that was a great 1st lesson (New Beginners Module I). Very well done, excellent & clear explanations, and great camera angles so you could really see the movements.

~Tino J.

I just joined the online course, and I’m loving it. Rina's lessons are fun, yet challenging. I started as a complete beginner with no previous flamenco dance experience, just an appreciation for the art form.  In her online course, she shows us the steps and guides us through choreography. I enjoy learning how to dance flamenco at my own pace. Thank you!

~Maria M.

It's a brilliant course for me. I never thought I would have the opportunity to study flamenco- no classes nearby, no need to travel, learn at my own pace with an excellent teacher.

Intro to Flamenco Course... what's inside

¡Toma! You will learn a few fundamentals first, then a choreography with 2 letras (singing verses) and a section of taconeo (footwork) in the 4-count rhythm of Tangos. Each lesson is easy to follow and only less than 10 minutes long.

Module 1: Foundations

The lessons in this module include an introduction to the course and a brief overview of flamenco, hand-clapping, arm positioning, hand movement, and footwork basics.

Links to the music used are provided.

Module 2: Demos

Here are the front and back view demonstrations of the complete Tangos choreography you will learn. Plus there's a complete practice session that's nice and slow without the music.

Tangos is a fun and funky rhythm in flamenco. This short choreography is set to the music of legendary singer, Cameron de la Isla. It includes 2 letras (singing verses) and 1 escobilla (footwork section)

Module 3: Tangos Choreography, 1st Letra

We start with the first letra (singing verse). This module has three videos: marking steps lesson (marcajes), accented break lesson (remates), then a practice session of the first whole letra (singing verse).

Module 4: Tangos Choreography, 2nd Letra

We continue with the 2nd letra (singing verse) of the song with two new markings (marcajes) and another break (remate).

This module has three videos: marking steps lesson, accented break lesson, then a practice session of the second letra (singing verse).

Module 5: Tangos Choreography, Escobilla

We finish the dance with the “escobilla” or footwork portion of the choreography. Practice slowly and try to articulate the sounds. Once you build up the muscle memory to do the movement slowly, then you can pick up the tempo.

This module has two videos: the escobilla lesson and practice.

Meet Your Teacher,
Rina Orellana

Rina is a Madrid-trained professional flamenco dancer with over 20 years of experience. She also has had her own dance academy in Los Angeles, California for over 15 years. There she trains many dancers from beginners looking for a fun community and workout all the way to training dancers to perform on their own in tablaos (flamenco venues.) She also has the Online Flamenco Studio, a thriving site with over 30 courses for dancers of all levels.

Rina has a special gift with breaking down the mysteries of flamenco into easy to understand elements. So, she thoroughly enjoys watching the progress her dancers have made whether it's finally "hearing the 12" for a beginner to a tablao dancer using one of her choreographies for her show.

It’s her hope that you, too, can begin your flamenco journey with the Intro to Flamenco Course and  unleash your own flamenco beast!!

Here’s what people are saying about Rina Orellana

Rina is a generous and enthusiastic teacher. Her love of flamenco is infectious. She explains things thoroughly, yet concisely. She demonstrates movements -  not only steps, but body position and arms and hands. After showing what she is going to teach, she breaks it down, then builds it back together, then practices with us! Thank you, Rina, for sharing your gift with us.

~Kathy S.

Rina's teaching is warm, encouraging and thorough, and you really feel that you are in a live class as you dance with her. For all of us who live in a "flamenco desert" this is a fantastic resource to find.

~Angela N.
