"AIRE" PERSONAL EXPRESSION WORKSHOP
The ONE thing I hear over and over again from dancers is the feeling of wanting to be able to EXPRESS YOURSELF truly, authentically, confidently while dancing flamenco. It IS possible! All you need are:
- Compás and a few marking steps (marcajes)
- Pellizcos to incorporate into your muscle memory
- Knowledge of the palo you are dancing
We cover that in this workshop and go over the aire of Solea por Bulerás, Alegrías and Solea.
Please note that I created this during "shelter-in-place" orders, so there's no mic and no dance studio--- but there's lots of good dancing!
You can't have any "aire" unless you have COMPAS! You must have the rhythm inside your bones. We'll start off with palmas then move on to basic markings in the 12 count rhythm.
Watch the tutorial and follow along.
- New beginners -- Focus on learning the palmas and focus on the feet while doing the marking steps WITHOUT arms.
- Advanced dancers -- Don't think that's it's too easy! Focus on controlled hand movements, abs pulled in and practice with even sloooooower compás.
- MUSIC USED: Jose Tanaka, Compás Flamenco Solea por Buleria @120bpm
- MORE MUSIC: Try going slower @100bpm or faster @140bpm

PELLIZCOS are those little moves that make the whole movement look nuanced and expressive. Think head movements, shoulder accents, a little hand. It's what invites personal expression to come out!
Watch the tutorial and follow along.
- New beginners-- Still focus on feet for the marking steps and don't worry so much about coordinating it all!
- Advanced dancers-- This is your jam! Work it in compás!!
- MUSIC USED: Jose Tanaka Solea por Buleria Compás Flamenco @120bpm
- MORE MUSIC: Try going slower @100bpm or faster @140bpm

Solea por Bulerías. It's aggressive and intense.... just the way we like it 😉 Now we put to practice what we've learned. Remember, the three things you need to dance with "aire" are compás, pellizcos, and an understanding of the palo that you are dancing.
Watch the tutorial and follow along.
- New beginners -- I hope you're getting the marking now! Keep working on the steps and *think* about the feeling of Solea por Bulerías.
- Experienced dancers -- Keep the integrity of the movement while you dance with the aire of Solea por Bulerías: aggressive, intense, grounded.

Alegrías is a very happy and lovely palo. But even though the energy is happy, it's still danced with intention and bravado.
Watch the tutorial and follow along.
- New beginners -- I hope you're getting the marking now! Keep working on the steps and *think* about the feeling of Alegrías.
- Experienced dancers -- Keep the integrity of the movement while you dance with the aire of Alegrías: happy, grounded, self-satisfied (LOL)
- MUSIC USED: Alegrias Solo Compas con guitarra 144bpm; Alegrias- Jose Anillo, Ritmo Flamenco 10
- MORE MUSIC: Canelita - Te voy a querer toda la vida; El Junco- Alegrias

Our last class is for the mother of all flamenco, Solea- solitude, angst, profound.
Watch the tutorial and follow along.
- New beginners-- Keep working on the steps and *think* about the feeling of Solea.
- Experienced dancers-- Solea is more difficult because it's so slow. But stay grounded and get those roots going deep!!
- MUSIC USED: Solea muy lenta con guitarra- Escuela de Flamenco; Solea cante y guitarra- Escuela de Flamenco
- MORE MUSIC: Rancapino Chico, Solea; Jose Merce, En la Hojita de un Olivo
