Core Program Block Three

MODULE 3

Let's work in counter time (CONTRATIEMPO)! Counter time footwork is an essential part of flamenco but can seem overwhelming. These lessons show you how to "listen" for counter time, work the technique, then advance. We're continuing with the Tientos, Solea and Segurilla, plus adding some bonus videos using the basic 12 count rhythm with three variations. Like all else in flamenco, consistency is key!

Beginner- Tientos: The "contratiempo" for Tientos can also be used for every 4-count rhythm (Tangos, Farruca, Taranto)

Intermediate- Solea: When doing "contratiempo" in Solea, the compás is faster and either goes into "double time" Solea or switches to more of a Buleria tempo.

Advanced- Seguirilla: The technique is the same, but the timing is adjusted to the 5-count rhythm of Seguirilla.

BONUS videos: The lesson and drills is for basic 12 count (much like the Solea video) and you can adapt it for all 12 count rhythms (Alegrias, Solea por Buleria, Guajira, etc).

TIP: Advanced dancers try playing palmas along with the footwork!
